journalism senior & community advocate
I'm a journalism senior at Texas State University, as well as a former community organizer in the Central Texas area. I am passionate about digital story-telling, education policy and social advocacy, as well as authentic relationship building.
Over the course of my undergraduate career at Texas State, I have been involved in many advocacy organizations that fight for immigrant rights, racial justice, environment justice and education equity, among other issues. In addition, I was previously a university tour guide and an LGBTQIA+ ally educator.
I also have served on many university and hiring committees as a student affairs appointee and to be the voice of my peers, including the committee to hire Texas State's first ever immigration attorney.
In 2017, I gave over 100 presentations to hundreds of immigrant families in Texas, teaching them their rights, as well as creating safety plans in the case of deportation.
In addition, I also helped organize citizenship clinics, in which permanent citizens could attend and file the citizenship paperwork free of charge with an attorney, in addition to providing them with study materials for their exam. Alongside community leaders, attorneys, union organizers and government officials, we assisted hundreds of permanent residents become citizens. Previously, I also have assisted in organizing DACA clinics and filing hundreds of applications for employment authorization and deferred action.
Currently, I am a sister of Lambda Xi Delta Multicultural Sorority and a member of the Texas State University chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. During my final year at Texas State, I am focusing on finishing off with strong academics, serving the San Marcos community through authentic service and nurturing the relationships I have built during my years in San Marcos.

Dr. Skyller Walkes| Former Interim Director at the Texas State University Office of Disability Services
Yunuen is an intentionally intersectional leader, confident, yet humble, and deeply committed to the work of social justice and community building. You will find Ms. Alvarado’s abilities, academic prowess, energy, dedication, commitment, and professionalism set her apart from most undergraduate students.
Hugo Romero| Former Project Manager at the UCLA Labor Center
Over the years I have had the great opportunity to oversee hundreds of interns through the various programs offered at the UCLA Labor Center, in addition to working closely with local and national immigrant and labor rights leaders; Yunuen Alvarado is unequivocally among the finest, most strategically and uniquely brilliant participants and leaders I have worked with. Her principled ferocity, critical lens, and commitment to her community are some of her top qualities.
Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch| Owner of Lincoln-Goldfinch Law
I have known Yunuen through her work as an intern and we have presented multiple times together on immigration issues – both to the immigrant community and to the press. I am continuously impressed by her willingness to share her story and to be a figurehead in the dreamer and immigrants’ rights movement. She is mature, unafraid, poised, and clearly very smart. I would not hesitate to hire her in my own office.
